happy holidays

sent our christmas cards out today...

our sweet little christmas tree

we brought minimal christmas decorations with us after we moved from switzerland to vienna: a string of lights, pinecones and a set of wooden balls.

last weekend however we went to the christmas market to choose a star topper, as requested by my three-year old, and we picked a pretty red wooden one.

everybody ready for xmas?

this is what we got anna for xmas this year (she is 3 1/2)

-a doll (from her mimi and pop pop)

-a jellycat rabbit (she asked santa specifically for this one)

-a dress up trunk (should keep her busy)

-foam building blocks (ever had a wooden one fall on your foot?)

-a toolbox (to balance out the dress up trunk?)

-a game of memory (because it's a classic)

i'll add a few books to the mix but that's about it, we're done!

we just buy presents for her these days, so the pressure is off-we're just looking forward to enjoying watching her open these while we sip mulled wine on xmas morning...

i <3 my re-kanken

being a student when you're 40 is cool and all up to the point where you start looking like one. because without youth, the student look is basically just sloppy.

i found myself needing a backpack really badly for a series of practical purposes: i sometimes have a need to go to the library with my book and ipad, i commute every day to go get my daughter at school and i recently developed neck problems probably due to all the stuff i was lugging around in my shoulder bag. bad idea!

so after first wasting 20 euro on a cheap one from zara which fit nothing i settled on this cool dark olive kanken and...it's not that bad! i still feel a little bit less feminine than i'd like wearing a backpack over a bag, but i guess this is my life now...

i do love the discreet logo on the re-kanken and the color. i also love that the shoulder straps are much thinner than the classic school backpack with its thick, padded straps (yuk!)

it's also nice to fit everything in one bag: my study materials, water bottle, snacks as well as my daughter's stuff and any shopping i may have acquired on the way to school (it's right next to a nice mall and i've been mall-deprived for many years, so don't judge me)...

back to school

i'm very proud of myself for signing up for university at the ripe age of 40...

these are my back to school goodies i got from flying tiger-of all people i went shopping with my mom who just happened to be visiting-that was a real deja-vu!

layering in 2016

when people talk about layering i think of some grungy 90's mix, but lately i feel like i'm getting better at this!

since starting full-time preschool two weeks ago we've had a lot of the above!

we can't be the only ones experience this, right? september is tough....

super lunch for one

one of the things i'm thankful about living in vienna is the health food stores in my neighborhood, providing me with a chance to eat some of my favorite superfoods, like the ones pictured: seaweed noodles, tempeh & miso soup...

cats & cats & cats

my three-year-old is a bit cat crazy...

here are some cat ears...

& some cat art (the two white poms must be hairballs)....

& the first library book she chose, ever.

one of us

it was a tough weeks on many levels.

one of bright spots was that we got mini's best friend back, this little pink bear known as "bom".

we worked hard all week to get him back after my daughter dropped him through the gap and onto the tracks below the underground train.

it was a traumatic experience as he is somewhat part of our family and we are so happy to have him back at home (and properly bathed)!

back to school

i'm usually ahead of the game when it comes to shopping for fall.

finding the things anna needs and likes (or she'll refuse to wear them) is a fun challenge.

she's opinionated and she's been picking what she wants to wear indipendently since she was 2: no jeans, only leggings; she finally loves skirts and dresses; plain tops won't cut it, there must be a cat/dog/bunny on it; jackets and coats must be more pretty than utilitarian and last but not least, shoes must be sparkly.

these are the rules at 3 years old.

i just want everything to go together easily so she doesn't look like a total clown so my rule is anything goes from the waist up but from the waist down it's solid colors only. and i also don't want to spend much more than100 euro on everything because it will last 6 months tops.

here is our shopping for fall...

zara glitter flats

zara skirt

zara dress

zara boots

zara jumper

zara shoes

zara jumper

zara jeggings

more grey shoes

someone clearly has a problem...

this is my second pair of "mara" flats from asos. the first pair i got was silver and they felt a bit like tap dance shoes but they also made some excellent rainy day/travel shoes. so much so that i bought pair n. 2.

these tick all the boxes for me as they are on sale/leather/grey/pointed.

and so the online shopping in a new country has begun!

things that make me hum

life in vienna is good so far.

it's the little things, like our local park entrance looks like this

and my little girl is smiling a lot, which i like.

i bought a fiddle leaf fig today (it was love at first sight)

we also went to the zoo

it's slowly beginning to feel like home!

fourth anniversary

going out to lunch today to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

in four years we got married, moved to switzerland, had a baby and organized our impending move to vienna. in other words it's been quite a ride!

you think you know who you are marrying on the day of your wedding, but there is so much more. i think four times as highly of my partner today than on that sweet, innocent day we shared on the first of june 2012.

my wish for us in the next year is to be able to find the right environment and the time to focus on each other as we desire.

two are better than one! happy anniversary
